About Hops & Barley

Hops & Barley are Joseph’s two cherished Australian Terriers.  They were given to him as a birthday gift in 1996 by his late wife, Angel.  Growing up in the beer business their names were a given - Hops & Barley - derived from the basic ingredients in beer.  To show just how special these dogs were to Joseph, he had them incorporated on the label of this wonderful wine. Tami’s dad, Doug Stuart of Doug Stuart Woodcarving, actually hand-carved this beautiful center piece for the label which includes an amazing replica of the dogs.  The piece was then photographed for the label.  Barley is the one featured on top.  He was born with a floppy ear, which adds to his adorable character.  His sister, Hops, is petite and full of energy.  Australian Terriers were originally bred to help control rodents, herd sheep and to serve as watchdogs.  They certainly live up to their ancestry.  They have a hard time relaxing from their gated deck when all day long they are watching the deer, turkey and quail graze in their yard, not to mention those lizards in the planter boxes.
